In Episode 2: Reflections on our last episode and the good and bad we’ve learnt from it. A Pavlovian-solution to unwanted behaviour, and we stumble upon a fractal of how we all communicate – believing that we’re on the same page when we’re often reading entirely different books. NotMorgan recounts his challenges in finding appropriate creative commons music for the show and appeals to listeners for help, and Morgan recommends some radio station-type podcasts that play cc music.
We then fearlessly tackle a mighty beast, our first in-depth discussion: Free Speech. Beginning with a definition of free speech and its incorporation into Human Rights law, we look at the difference between our capacity to speak freely and the possible consequences for doing so. Musing on whether free speech is a right or a choice, Morgan appears to liken clothes-shopping with his partner to facing a firing squad. Noting the many topics that need to be considered in a discussion on free speech, we then set the tone for our continuing discussion by starting to look at the “broad exceptions” that apply to free speech rights. We briefly discuss causing offence when there is no intention to do so, and wonder: when free speech laws exist to apparently protect morals, who decides what is moral? And don’t we already have sufficient laws without creating more?
We end with Morgan coming dangerously close to sounding like an evil ‘climate denier’… who should immediately lose all right to free speech and preferably be taken away and burnt at the stake. If you would like to join in this total hypocrisy by suggesting other tortures we could inflict upon him – I’m personally a big fan of stoning – or if you have anything more positive to contribute, please get in touch… and join us again next week as our discussion on free speech continues…
