We’ve been away almost 3 months. Have you been sat, pining for us at the door, or didn’t you even notice we were gone? Either way, we’re very glad to be back with our usual blend of news, insight, discussion and music.
Yes, just like global warming, we’ve been on a hiatus of our own, but we return with a hefty show, bursting with our take on the news and what’s been happening whilst we’ve been away.
Before that though, Morgan details the reason for our absence, the birth of his first child and human resource, lovingly called ‘Morgan version 2.0’, or ‘V2’ to his friends. Describing what seems to have been a relatively calm and sedate affair, quite contrary to the media’s portrayal of birth, Morgs gives us his first impression of fatherhood, which seems to mainly involve house music, cloning sheep and protecting your valuables. But, if the love and light of a gushing, first-time father isn’t what you’ve come to expect from us, then fear not as we soon return to more familiar territory by examining what’s been going on in this strange world that V2 now finds himself in.
Social media, the surveillance of it, its surveillance of you, and the weird and not-so-wonderful things people do with it feature heavily in this episode. We look at Facebook’s user manipulation ‘emotional contagion’ study, and a dating site’s ‘human experiments’, and discover that tweeting about bad service can make you ‘a safety threat’. Also, whilst our backs were turned, ‘fraping’ (‘Facebook raping’) has become the offence of ‘criminal damage’, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, and we learn from the Metropolitan Police that simply viewing a video might make you a criminal… or not. Morgan Barke looks at the UK’s voluntary anti-piracy measures, which lack bite, and the Government’s proposal to spend M£3.5 telling us how we can download media legally, which sounds very much like an advert for Netflix and Spotify. NotMorgan expresses his concern at the FBI coming here, apparently to dam the ‘jihadi flow’, and we ponder the mixed messages of the FBI Director who wants to recruit ‘top programmers’ who are also weed smokers – whilst weed remains Federally illegal and, in their eyes, as harmful as heroin. NotMorgan discovers that just because you’re paranoid, that doesn’t mean that your pot plants and crisp packets aren’t spying on you. And do you prefer it shaven or unshaven? Your news, we mean, as we even manage to include a shaved dog and an unshaven sheep. All this plus smug, dirty protests, smart meters, ‘Fire Ice’ and even some ‘agricultural news’, which we guarantee is far from what you’d expect. Indeed, as always, our take on these news stories is of a type you’ll never hear on the compromised mainstream media, so do please join us…
The discussion topic will be back next episode, we had far too many news stories to catch up on to include one this show. As usual, though, we do have our free, creative-commons music to play us out. Please get in touch to let us know that you’re still out there listening, and send us your thoughts and feedback. Enjoy!!!
