The Value For Value Model
Reflective Air is solely supported by the Value For Value model.
This means that we do not have to sully your listening experience and, more importantly, your mind, with the mass-hypnotising, soul-sickening messages of companies desperately trying to sell you stuff you don’t need. It also means that we are able to speak freely without fear of upsetting our advertisers and, in doing so, losing their financial support – a freedom that many individuals and companies willingly gave up long ago.
Rather than join the vast majority of content-producers who submit to this compromising and free-speech corrupting model, we ask our listeners to support the show by giving us value directly in exchange for the value our show gives them.
This relatively new and increasingly popular model acts as an alternative to the usual options of paying upfront and often not getting what you want, or having something be ‘free’ with various ‘hidden costs’ attached. For example, in the UK we require an expensive television license which pays for the BBC’s output. How much of the license holder’s fee goes to paying for content that they’ll never watch and may even object to? The alternative channels, as in many other countries, are funded by advertising. This means that anything you do want to see is constantly interrupted by advertisements – the programme’s content itself is constructed to fit around these ad breaks. Or you can look at the ‘free’ products and services of mass social media companies, again funded by advertising and by collecting, taking ownership of and selling your personal information to whomever they please.
With the Value For Value model, you give value only when you feel you have received value. Above all, it is simply a very fair way in which to exchange value, and an honest, open and transparent way of supporting the things you enjoy, thereby enabling them to continue providing you with more value in return.
The Value For Value Exchange
The value that we offer with our show differs for each individual listener. In general, we hope to inform and entertain but, more importantly, we hope that our ‘reflections’ – our thoughts, opinions and ideas – may provoke or encourage interesting, and maybe even valuable or rewarding, reflections of your own. We believe that our show notes (and the links within them to items discussed on the show) provide value for anyone wanting to find out more about an item or do their own further research. Hopefully our listeners gain things of interest and value from the subjects we research and the things we talk about, whether that value gives you a life-altering, whole new perspective on something or just some new tunes to listen to. Maybe all we provide is an enjoyable listen – something to occupy your mind, or to distract it and enhance chores or journeys, making time pass more pleasantly. Whatever it is, if you’re enjoying it and want to keep listening, you’re getting value.
There are many ways in which you can give us value in return.
How You Can Contribute to the Show
Financial contributions are very much appreciated. The show costs time and money to produce and we want to put out a show that is ever-increasing in quality in as many areas as possible. We need better equipment and to be able to afford good systems support like server costs, etc.
If you would like to make a financial contribution, please consider how much you pay for things in your life and how much value, or how many hours of value, these things give you. For example, how much do you pay to watch television, to buy a CD or to go to the cinema or theatre or a sporting event? How much might you spend on a coffee in a day or on drinks at the weekend? Please consider how much value you get from these things compared to how much you have to pay for them, and then compare that with the value you get from the show.
We will be thoroughly open, honest and genuinely transparent regarding any contributions made to the show – and we don’t mean ‘transparent’ in the way that President Obama’s “most transparent Government in history” has turned out not to be ;)
All contribution amounts will be read out on the show along with the name and general location of the contributor, unless you specifically ask us to keep your contribution anonymous. When relevant, we will update our listeners with details of how financial contributions are being re-invested in the show.
For UK listeners this is our preferred method of payment, as this eliminates the banksters cut. For non-UK bank transfers please use transferwise.com if over £30, otherwise use Bitcoin, Flattr or PayPal to minimise the banksters cut.

A great way to give a little value back. We will make every effort to spend our bitcoins rather than hoard them or cash them in, supporting the bitcoin community.
to contribute some value to our show. I have chosen the static button (without the counter) and to hosted the button image on my server. This way Flattr can not track our community and only Flattr users when they actually click the button and kindly contribute.
While not our preference, we do accept contributions via PayPal.
Other Ways You Can Contribute
For those of you who would like to contribute but are genuinely unable to contribute anything financially, here are other ways in which you can contribute:
We are desperately in need of and would appreciate artwork which we can use, whether that’s for logos, newsletters, merchandise, etc. We would really appreciate ‘album art’ – the art that appears beside the episode on your podcast aggregator and on your device whilst the episode is playing. Ideally we would like to have different art for each episode and would like to be able to collate all artwork received, and regularly make it available to listeners in some form.
We would appreciate it if artwork submissions could be made available using the creative-commons license – but please note that, as the show accepts financial contributions, we are unable to use non-commercial licenses. Alternatively, you could accompany your artwork submissions with an email giving us permission to use it.
Any art that we use will be appropriately credited on the show itself and in the show notes for that episode.
We like to sample a piece of music at the beginning of each episode and play a whole track at the close of the show. If you would like to send us your music (or recommend and provide links to music) that we can use, we would prefer it if that music was available using the creative commons license – but please note that, as the show accepts financial contributions, we are unable to use non-commercial licenses. Alternatively, if providing music you created yourself, you could accompany your submission with an email giving us permission to use it.
If you have any skills that could contribute to the show, whatever they may be, and would like to help out, please get in touch.
By downloading our show via torrent instead of using iTunes or other podcast aggregators, you save us money on server costs. You also get the show faster this way and avoid adding more information to the profiles that these aggregators typical collect on their users. In addition, by ‘seeding’ the show yourself, you enable others to download the show quickly and support an alternative to the ‘free-but-selling-your-information’ aggregators.
Communicating With Us / Forming A Community
We actively encourage our listeners to contribute to, participate in and get involved with the show. We want to hear your thoughts, opinions and ideas on the subjects we discuss and the show in general. Maybe you’re aware of some research or relevant information that could contribute to the discussion – if so, send it to us (providing links to source material where possible, please). As we say: this is something of a social experiment after all, and we like and would encourage the idea of a positive community possibly building around the show. We don’t have any fixed ideas or format for how the show will always be, we are far more interested in seeing how it develops naturally, and in allowing it to be whatever it wants to be. To this end, we need interaction with our listeners and are open to any suggestions you might have, and your general communications. Please do get in touch.
Spreading The Word
Finally, we wish to grow in listenership and add other cool people into our community :) If you feel you know others of the appropriate mindset who may enjoy the show, please let them know about it – they may thank you and we certainly appreciate it.
To all of our contributors, how ever you choose to contribute:
